This is a series of .65 cases of soft tissue sarcoma of 11 histological types, excluding
sarcomas of bone, lymphatics, viscera, and oro-naso-pharyngeal regions, which were diagnosed
in the department of General Surgery at Jeon Ju Presbyterian Medical Center from January 1963 to September 1975. A clinical review of these 65 cases of soft tissue sarcoma revealed the following information:
1) The major pathological types of 65 soft tissue sarcomas, in order of frequency, were Fibrosarcoma(40.0%), Rhabdomyosarcoma(24.6%), Hemangiosarcoma (12.3%) and Unclassi-fied sarcoma (6.2%). These 4 sarcomas constituted 83% of our series of 65 cases.
2) The highest incidence of the soft tissue sarcomas occurred in the age group of 41~50 years which comprised 24.6%.
3) The male sex was more frequently affected, 58%(38 cases) occurring in men.
4) The commonest location of the 4 major types of soft tissue sarcoma was as follows: Fibrosarcoma (Lower extremity, 46.2%); Rhabdomyorarcoma (Neck & face, 62.5%); Hemangiosarcoma (Neck & face, Lower extremity, each 37.5%); Unclassified sarcoma (Neck & face, 75%).
5) The youngest age at the time of -diagnosis was 8 months and the oldest age was 77 years.
6) The determinate 5-year survival rate of 23 determinated cases followed 5 years or more after surgical resection with intent to cure was 25%.
7) The average survival of 17 cases known to have died after surgical resection was 22.6 months, which was longer than that of the untreate3 cases (11.5 months).
8) The average duration from the onset to the diagnosis at P.M.C. was 31 months, with a range of 20 days to 30 years.
9) The number of cases which had a history of simple local excision prior to coming to P.M.C. was 55 (36 cases) and the average duration until recurrence was 8 months.
10) Indolence of tumor growth as suggested by the absence of pain at first visit was 72% (47 cases).
